John Owen’s “Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers” is a Christian Puritan classic. We started this book late May 2008 and used the unabridge edition, which God has blessed us with through Crossway publishers. The updated edition (an excellent one at that) was edited by Justin Taylor and Kelly Kapic and compiled three of John Owen’s works on sin, including “Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers,” “On Temptation: The Nature and Power of It,” and “Indwelling Sin.” We chose only to go through “Of the Mortification of Sin,” 
perhaps coming back to this volume and finishing the other two works at a later date.
About the Author:
John Owen lived from 1616 to 1683. He stands alongside giants such as Jonathan Edwards as one of the greatest Reformed theologians. During his late teens he was convicted of his sinfulness, bringing him to despair, but slowly he grew in faith in Christ, who gave him peace. He is known as being incredibly difficult to read, but worth the effort, like mining spiritual gold. He was a master surgeon, able to penetrate the deepest recesses of the heart with a piercing analysis of the human condition. Other famous works by him include: Communion with God, The Holy Spirit, The Death of Death in the Death of Christ, and The Glory of Christ.
